For gaming on an AM4 slot, you'll want a CPU with at least 4 cores and higher performance for smooth gameplay.

Which motherboard you choose matters because chipset issues can arise. For models B450, B550, X470 or X570 it should work, though the 400 series might need a BIOS update.

For CPU-heavy games, this setup works well with a Ryzen 5 5600X.

For gaming you might succeed with just 4 cores, but 6 usually offers better flexibility for background tasks. The 5600X provides good value when your system supports it.

Between 2017 and 2020 I relied on six-core CPUs for gaming, but now my eight-core setup is outperforming them. The six-core units are no longer part of my gaming rigs.

It heavily relies on the games you play, your settings, graphics card specs, and desired resolution and frame rate. For example, running a game at 4K 60fps with a 6700 XT might work with an older Ryzen 5 1400. However, aiming for 1080p 360fps on an RTX 3080 Ti calls for a high-end CPU like a 5900X or 5950X.
