A few days back there was an electrical interruption in my area. I powered down my PC, which is linked to my UPS (https://www.cyberpower.com/in/en/product/sku/bu1000e). After leaving the room for about half an hour, white smoke emerged from the back of my PC while it remained on, with the RGB lights still active. When I returned, the smoke ceased but a burnt odor lingered. I turned off the UPS and unplugged the PC. Now, whenever I restart it, the MCB trips. Upon inspection, there appears to be a burning smell coming from the power supply unit, though everything else seems normal—confirmed by a local repair shop.

My concern is how my PC managed to turn on despite these issues. My hypothesis is a power surge occurred. The UPS is functioning properly. I’m seeking advice on preventive measures to safeguard my PC against similar situations. Also, any recommendations for PSUs would be appreciated. I currently have a 450 W maximum draw setup and used a 550 W 80+ Bronze unit.

If the pc was shutdown already when the UPS went to battery mode it is very strange it would cause any issue. There is almost no power usage.
You pc always pulls some tiny amount of power unless you turn off the switch on the power supply. So during that time it technically was running on the UPS but the power draw was so small it wouldn't matter about the quality of the power.
In addition unless you buy a very expensive UPS there is always a tiny outage that the power supply will see when it switches between the city power and the battery inside the UPS. The capacitors in the power supply normally hide this. This though should not damage the power supply it is designed to run that way for people that do not have UPS.

Does the full list of system hardware specifications and operating system details are available?
What is the production number and model of the power supply unit?
How long has it been in use?
Was it frequently used for gaming, video editing, or other intensive tasks?

Is your computer prepared to restart after a power outage? (This is typically found in the BIOS under power management settings) If yes, turn it off.
Are you sure you fully powered down the device and didn’t just put it to sleep? This might be why it was in that condition when you came back. If you’re unsure and this happens again, completely shut down both the PC and the UPS before saving any data.

To verify the first step, I need to acquire a new PSU since this one appears to be under warranty. I’ll inform you once the PC starts up. I’m sure I powered it down correctly, and at that moment I considered turning off the UPS too (not sure why).

So you were operating on the batteries for some time? It’s unlikely the UPS you have is built to handle modern equipment. This problem is more common with generators, but it applies to UPS as well. Modern power supplies demand very clean electricity, especially a pure sine wave signal. Many UPS models produce simulated sine waves. Some power supplies can handle this better than others. You’ll often see reports that power supplies shut down immediately when the UPS switches to battery power. There’s also information suggesting non-sine wave power might harm these units. I find it hard to believe this claim is genuine, as it seems mostly aimed at promoting more expensive UPS models. It could simply be that your power supply was older and the poor-quality power from the UPS caused it to fail. If you’re fortunate, you might just need to replace the power supply. Be cautious with lower-end units—quality is hard to find, and prices jump significantly between 550 and 750 watts.

It seems the power was off, so the UPS ran on battery. The PC still shut down even though it wasn’t completely turned off. I believe it might have been a PSU issue, and replacing the PSU should fix the problem. I’ll be more careful and turn it off when not in use to avoid this.

Therefore, during that period it technically operated via the UPS, but the power draw was so minimal it wouldn’t affect the quality of the electricity.

Moreover, unless you purchase an extremely costly UPS, there’s often a minor interruption that the power source detects when switching between grid power and the battery inside the unit. These small changes usually go unnoticed because the capacitors in the supply mask them. This situation shouldn’t harm the power supply, as it is built to function this way for those without UPS systems.

It might have simply been a faulty power supply, which would likely fail the next time you unplugged it. Now you need to hope that nothing else was damaged by the power source. Since it was already off, your chances of avoiding further issues are higher.

In the end, people always advise unplugging machines when not in use to prevent surges and lightning damage, but this is rare and seldom causes problems like yours.
