What makes a VPN a good VPN?

I'm considering using a VPN mainly for Netflix and YouTube. I'm not sure if it offers any benefits for YouTube specifically. For Canadians, the challenge is real, so I don't have much to compare. What makes a good VPN? Which one do you think works best? You might want to try Hotspot Shield since I recognize its name. Thank you.

A good VPN should offer a reliable connection without significantly slowing down your internet speed. I find Hotspot Shield unsatisfactory due to excessive ads and bothersome pop-ups.
