I am assembling a fresh PC and these components are from my previous setup.
Specs include: i7-7700K OC to 4.8GHZ, Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming, some overclocking, GA-Z170X-Gaming 3, 2x16GB DDR4 3200MHZ with some overclocking, 2x 2.5" SATA SSDs, 2x M.2 NVMe SSDs, and eight 120mm cooling fans covering CPU and case.
I own a brand new 500W power supply and an old EVGA 850W unit that has been in use for eight years—probably best to replace the 850W due to its age and warranty considerations.
Online tools suggest either under 500W or above 500W, depending on the situation.
With current PSU prices, should I opt for a higher wattage model, such as 650W, or stick with the existing 500W unit?

When browsing reviews for the best PSUs, avoid opting for low-cost options. Stick to established brands with solid ratings. Utilize the provided calculators; if a part fits within its wattage range, choose the higher end. I follow recommended power supply wattages for GPUs, which may be slightly above average but necessary eventually. Consider future usage when selecting the PSU—whether for another project or testing purposes—and always use the original cables that came with the unit.

the suggested power supply for a gtx 1080 is 450w, but your 500w evga unit should be able to manage it, especially if you plan to overclock.

Your new PSU is reaching its limits. It could be sufficient, but I'm unsure how much the 1080 might consume in short bursts. Problems might arise if the PSU can't provide enough power, especially if you plan to overclock. You might want to avoid a 700-750 PSU; even 850 offers more flexibility for future GPU upgrades. Money is the clear choice, but with prices rising, I'd consider a long-term investment. This could cover both a GPU upgrade and a potential PC upgrade.

Edit - Perhaps a beQuiet! Pure Power M 12 850 or a Straight Power unit would work, as long as it's worth the cost.
