I usually see my FPS goal shift with different games. In single-player, I aim for 120 or 144 FPS, but sometimes I settle for 75 or even 60 to get the best settings or ray tracing. For competitive play, I want at least 170 Hz on my monitor. It’s unclear if others match this or if I’m different for not always syncing with their refresh rate.

Values between 100 and 144 tend to feel very smooth and comfortable, while medium to high details generally make most games look quite good.

There seems to be a mismatch in settings. I need to check the configuration then. Also, averaging an LCD's performance shows 60-120 FPS, while a CRT typically delivers around 20 years ago. I often sacrifice frame rate for better graphics in some games, since not all titles require 144 FPS.

many factors influence the experience. If the game runs slowly, smooth performance becomes essential—often aiming for 30 to 60 frames per second. Sometimes the issue lies with the engine, especially on console platforms where performance has changed over time. In faster-paced games, higher frame rates are preferred, but for campaign-style content, better visual quality matters more. Screen resolution also plays a role; at 60Hz, exceeding it offers little benefit. At 4K, a minimum of 30 FPS or 60 is recommended, focusing more on image clarity than speed. Regarding ray tracing, it may provide richer details like enemy positions, enhancing gameplay insights. At maximum settings on a weaker machine, 30 or 60 FPS might suffice, but adjusting to a comfortable range can significantly improve the experience.

Top configurations at the highest resolution, surprisingly offers the smoothest experience when 60fps is enabled.

For competitive games like CS or Valorant I aim for 240fps. In non-competitive titles such as Doom I target a minimum of 100fps. Anything else is fine as long as I keep the graphics at 60 locked. I’m open to reducing settings for better performance if it doesn’t noticeably affect quality.

It seems many targeting 100 FPS are delivering noticeable improvements in SP games. Does this suggest we've all agreed the best balance lies between eye candy and frame rate?

Optimal depends on the specific game. Certain titles offer higher quality options than frame rates, while others provide smoother motion when the display is adequate.

Lord.... results change depending on the game. I use 4K settings. In Destiny 2 I aim for 60fps by lowering some options while keeping textures and shadows intact. For Horizon Zero Dawn I enabled adaptive resolution, finding 60fps smoother than 30-40 at 4K but in Star Citizen I can run at 25-30 without problems. Other titles sometimes work around 40-45fps. It really depends on each game, though—I don’t know why HZD feels shaky at 30fps even though it has consistent frame rates like Star Citizen.

optimization involves capturing certain animations at a higher frame rate, which can affect movement animation performance. It seems they aimed for around 60 fps initially. Other games handle this differently or provide solutions to these challenges. It's similar to how physics is often tied to 30 fps, even though that isn't ideal.
