Currently, inexpensive PC parts are arriving from China in Malaysia. I was checking out affordable components to see what makeshift upgrades could fit into old cases from the late 90s or my current cooler. I’ve noticed that X99 parts and Xeon processors are quite affordable. It’s hard to decide which one to choose because there are so many options available. The Soyo mobos I read seem to be just rebranded Maxsun boards, which are known for their reputation and quality.

I’m assuming a higher GHz is preferable since it can match I7 K models and could work with older 10 series, 16 series, or even the 20 series. Here are some links where I can order them:

The Soyo mobos I came across seem to be rebranded versions of Maxsun boards. Those are known for their strong reputation and quality. For current hardware, it would be inconsistent. The links aren't functional for me, but you might want to explore the Xeon E5-2696 V4 or E5-2699 V4 options. I don't know the exact prices based on your location.

Well, I suppose the upper limit is around 3.6 for speed, considering the stock overdrive? That’s without any overclocking. I was thinking of going for an X79, but it seems like it wouldn’t be worth it since it’s worse and less common than the E5 models. A 15 to 20 rm upgrade would cost about 5 to 8 USD. It looks like a mainlander might be offloading a bunch of old server chips—any suggestions for V5? That one has some.

I question your chances of boosting those processors on that board. Xeon chips were built for reliability, not for instability—overclocking would be counterproductive. Honestly, you're aiming too high for what the hardware can handle. A retro setup is fine, but expecting it to run at higher speeds in 2025 isn't realistic.

I found the best little goober CPU I've seen, which is the E5-2640V4. I don't need to overclock it; I'm curious if the factory setting is around 3 something. Overclocking isn't my thing either, since my previous builds were a mediocre 04 Pentium and a decent Vostro 230 Core 2 Duo. It might cost nearly half a grand, but that's typical for anything from the 6th generation.
