To the extent required before reaching voltage or thermal boundaries, I would investigate the safe voltage and temperature ranges for the CPU and gradually increase, conducting stress tests until errors cease. Of course, when overclocking beyond just the multiplier, you must consider memory controller speed/voltages and other parts, which complicates the process.
