What is the proper way to underclock?
Hello, you're adjusting your CPU's voltage from 3.4GZ to 3.1GZ while keeping the same voltage level. This should help lower its temperature until you apply thermal paste. Since the current voltage is 1.365V, reducing it to 1.200V may further decrease heat generation.
Adjust settings directly in the control panel isn't necessary. Switch from Performance to Balanced or Power saver in the settings menu. This applies to Windows 7, though the interface might differ on Windows 10. Proceed to Change plan settings and select "Advanced power settings." There you can adjust the CPU's maximum power state to a lower percentage than 100%. This helps the CPU maintain a frequency below 100% when battery is present—especially useful for older batteries. The processor model shown is i5-3210m, which typically operates around 150 MHz and can reach up to about 3090 MHz occasionally. It usually stays near 2.3 GHz or 2.8 GHz.
I moved quickly before following what Marius recommended. I reduced the CPU frequency multiplier from 3.4MHZ to 3.1 MHZ and lowered the CPU voltage from 1.375V to 1.1125V. (Is this acceptable?) I kept the NB frequency multiplier and CPU voltage unchanged. It was quite surprising—I dropped from around 72-77°C while browsing to 50-53°C with a bit of cooling from the fan next to me. That’s really impressive!
We don't know. If your system becomes unstable, then it's too low. You're doing a manual clocking outside of AMD's spec, so it's on a per-silicon basis. Every chip is different. FYI, Ivy Mobile (High Five), and most CPU's for that matter, have a lower limit for clock speed. For us, it's 1.2 GHz. Beyond this, the CPU goes into deeper sleep states to reduce power usage, sometimes even turning cores off temporarily. LFM is the lowest practical speeds for the chip, and it won't physically clock below that. (Maybe with a manual clocking, but there's little point) There's a minimum voltage required to keep it alive, and that's the frequency it can run at there. That being said, I keep my minimum state at 0%, and never have had issues.
