Wait, so the chips are uniform, right? But it's the motherboard and PSU that determine how much you can overclock. No, they affect the limits. My 4770k will reach 4.7 on an MSI GD65 gaming board, with temps between 60 to 65 during full load... I'm using an H100i. Some will go higher, others lower... I might be able to push it further if I try.

just a quick note about my findings:
i have a 4770k on an asus z87 deluxe with a h100i (with noctua fans)
the asus 1 click OC brought it to 4.4ghz when using 1 or 2 cores, and 4.3ghz when using 3 or all 4 cores.
after disassembling the cpu and re-running it, asus maintained the same performance but with a noticeably cooler component.
i’m not sure if this is just luck or quality of my cpu, or if i could extract more performance by doing the manual overclock myself. i don’t have the time to master that yet. i’ll stick with asus deluxe boards going forward because of this advantage.

Currently I'm achieving a stable 4.3 GHZ on air cooling without needing a voltage boost.
I tried 4.5 GHZ but after roughly five minutes it began throttling, so I lowered it back to 4.3 GHZ.
Throughout the overclocking sessions, it hasn't experienced any BSODs except when attempting to raise the clock speed using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility.
I'm considering purchasing a water cooler with dual radiators to improve cooling performance.
Also curious about how much further my CPU can run without increasing voltage.
My CPU cooler is the Zalman Cnps11x and my motherboard is the Gigabyte Z87 HD3.
