What is the best anti-virus software + some questions
I agree, there are usually at least three to four threads each week in this area. It needs more focus. Personally, I use ESET Smart Security (a bit too much), but nod32 works perfectly. If you think it’s worth the investment, go for it. For free options, people seem to favor Avg and Avast (I dislike both). Built-in antivirus on Windows is sufficient. As long as you avoid clicking on suspicious links and downloading from questionable sites, it’s fine for most users. I remember when nod32 had a free version—it was minimal, just a tiny program that caught everything quickly without consuming much system resources. It never caused noticeable issues. I’ve always appreciated them.
I don't believe you should purchase AV, since most free options are nearly identical to paid ones except for the extra features in the premium versions. I suggest Panda Free AV, Avira Free AV, Avast Free AV, AVG Free AV, Qihoo 360 Total Security, and Bitdefender Free AV. However, if you decide on Bitdefender Free AV, be ready for automatic file deletion when it flags false positives. Right now I use Qihoo 360 Total Security and I find it extremely efficient, using only 30MB–45MB of RAM and scanning between 50MB–60MB.
Not a free choice, but Norton Internet Security has been reliable for years. It tends to use more system resources, especially when you adjust all the settings. I recall older versions being quite slow and inefficient, but the latest one performs better than before. You can tweak a few options to reduce its impact, except during full scans, which usually take a long time. Overall, it works well for me despite the occasional slowdown. The price is $60 per year, which can be a significant cost for many users, especially when free options exist. Uninstalling it isn’t too difficult, though it can be a bit tricky. Customer support has been responsive and helpful in the past. Still, the yearly fee is a major concern for most people. I’ve stayed with it because I’m comfortable with its operation and have used it consistently. Others often praise Microsoft’s security tools like Windows Defender or Security Essentials, but I’m not sure enough about them to recommend them over Norton. Some suggest using Malwarebytes for extra protection, as it scans for threats like zero-day attacks and unwanted programs that don’t harm your system. This tool works well alongside antivirus software, catching things that might slip through.
