Earning $45 grants a standard ship, beta privileges, and an arena commander pass. This setup works well for the current alpha phase and future alpha updates, which will cost $5 each or offer a basic ship plus the main game at $30. You can purchase module passes to access the final single-player and multiplayer titles, which are quite functional and place you in the ongoing alpha stage. Future alpha modules will be priced at $5 each, or you can buy a basic ship and the core game without beta/alpha access if you wish to join. While it may not be the top ship, many players find it competitive, especially in open environments where smaller vessels can shine. The game remains a Kickstarter project, so buying ships helps fund its development. Everything available now can be obtained later without real money, and once released, ship purchases will require a monthly or weekly spending limit using real currency.
