I just set up a Nas4Free box for home use and need guidance on connecting it via VPN so remote access is possible. I also have an unused PC that might be useful later. Let me know if you'd like help with the setup steps.

Configure OpenVPN on the NAS device and then redirect the VPN port to your local network.

NAS4Free works well, though it can feel quite uninteresting. (That’s why I prefer it—storage should be dull.) You can install it on the NAS4Free system, but you might need to dig a bit if no plugin exists. It’s primarily built for FreeBSD, yet some unusual components are included. pfSense is another viable choice.
