Currently, your computer setup seems reasonably well-suited for a variety of games. If you regularly play specific titles, check to see if your central processing unit or graphics card is consistently operating at its maximum capacity. Prioritize upgrading the component that’s frequently reaching 100% utilization.

A replacement power supply is required to accommodate the latest graphics card. I plan to upgrade my processor too, potentially selecting an i7-4790 at a reduced cost. Alternatively, a new motherboard would be advantageous. To quickly improve my gaming performance, acquiring a GTX 1060 or RX 580—or a comparable model currently discounted—would be suitable.

My graphics card is typically operating at its maximum capacity, while my central processing unit is running around half its potential.

Well that's your answer then, definitely will need a new power supply for anything more powerful as mentioned above.

If I purchase an Ex 580, would I require a new motherboard or just a replacement PSU?

Uncertain about the financial constraints and unfamiliar with British prices, but:
Corsair TX-550M costs £70.
Gigabyte Aorus RX570 with 4GB of memory is priced at £146.

What’s your budget? If finances are unlimited, my recommendation is:

A PCPartPicker component list:
/
Cost analysis by retailer.
Graphics Card:
XFX – Radeon RX 580 8 GB GTS XXX ED Video Card
(£183.59 at Amazon UK)
Power Supply:
Corsair – TXM Gold 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
(£79.00 at AWD-IT)
Total:
£262.59
The total cost includes shipping, applicable taxes, and any promotional offers applied. Created by PCPartPicker on 2019-02-01 at 15:42 GMT+0000.
Indeed, the motherboard is compatible.
