Personally, I find that quality units usually come with an online calculator to help you figure out the right size. I've always appreciated APC models because they've consistently met my expectations.

That's a good observation. I didn't consider shutting everything off during a power outage, and I think five minutes will be sufficient.

Having the laptop being part of the equation is really just academic since it already has a backup battery and there is no real need to plug it into one aside from the power conditioning that some models of backup offer.
