So I just received a free motherboard, here’s the link: http://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-G...-rev-10#ov. I’m planning to overclock my CPU on this board. I have a choice between the Core 2 Duo E8400 and the Extreme Dual Core X6800. From my research, the E8400 has a locked multiplier, while the X6800 doesn’t. Both CPUs are affordable under $25. I need to decide which one offers the best balance of ease, decent performance in games from 2000-2005, and the ability to reach 4GHz. My current build includes the following specs (excluding CPU): MBOO Gigabyte G31M-s2l rev 1.0, 4 GB DDR2 8000 MHz, GeForce 7950 GX2, 600W PSU, DVD drive, and a 1TB SATA HDD. I’m also using a Corsair A70 CPU cooler. Which CPU would be more suitable for easy overclocking to 4.0GHz?

Why are you considering dual-cores? That motherboard offers quad-core support. It’s best to opt for a Core 2 Quad rather than a dual-core. The Q8400 is a solid option for budget-friendly performance. You can find them around $12 on eBay. For improved performance, consider the Q9650 or an Xeon equivalent.

Why are you looking at dual-cores? That motherboard supports quad-cores. Definitely go with a Core 2 Quad instead of a dual-core. Q8400 would be a good choice for cost effectiveness. They're like $12 on eBay. If you want something better a Q9650 or Xeon equivalent.
the reason im going with a dual core instead of a quad core is because non of the games my nephew wants to play would utilize or benefit from a quad core sure games like the witcher 3 and GTA V might benefit from a quad core but games like doom 3 and GTA vice city wont benefit from a quad core at all most if not all the pc games my nephew wants to play were released back when dual core cpu's were just starting to come out hence why i wanna go dual core instead of quad core
why waste money on a quad core cpu if the extra 2 cores wont be utilized at all

I realized it's the GeForce 7950, not the HD 7950. A dual-core would work fine. That was my error for not paying attention. I might choose the X6800 instead if it wasn't too expensive.
