I'm upgrading from a 3080 to an i5 10400, and I'm considering the i9 10900k or 11900kf. The price gap between the 10900k and 11700k is similar, so my goal is to eliminate any performance limits.

11900KF is option four if you ignore the budget. I believe the performance gap in games is minimal between 11700 and 10900, but adding two cores to a 10900K will boost productivity tasks.

Yes, I believe you should aim for that amount.

The primary goal of your PC setup is to support either gaming or productivity, depending on your needs.

I don’t have much money for a CPU. I mostly use it for gaming, sometimes for editing, and I keep Windows open to avoid losing data. For my 10400 it’s been tough balancing both tasks, though gaming is the main focus.

11900K is a poor choice for sand. 11700K isn’t much improved, honestly I dislike it most of the time—it’s super hot and doesn’t store data well. Unless you have a top-tier Z590 board, skip K or KF models and avoid the 11900. 10900 performs better overall.

Would that suffice on a 3080 12GB system without any performance limits?

I have plenty available. My 11700K powers the 3080 without any problems in all cases, and it has eight cores. The 10900K offers ten cores, while the 11900K is also an eight-core model, just a bit improved with TVB turned on. *EDIT* If I had considered this earlier, I would have swapped my 11700K for a 10900K right away. I think I’d have been more satisfied. The only reason I chose the 11-series over another 10 was to utilize the third M.2 on my Z590, and I might have preferred the enhanced performance and quieter operation of the 10900K.
