i7-14700 represents an update to Raptor Lake and is a 14th generation processor. The Core Ultra (Series 2) 7.265 GHz recommended by helper800 is considered Arrow Lake, while the 15th generation chip also features Pluton and marks AMD's entry into this lineup since the 6000 series. Lunar Lake serves as a more energy-efficient counterpart to Arrow Lake, allowing its NPU to operate with significantly less power compared to using a GPU for AI tasks.
One problem then... not all the desktop CPU have NPU. So if it does, it will only exist on laptop and a few Intel CPU, I don't know if Microsoft want to shoot themselves in the foot/head that much. AMD don't appear to be putting them on them yet.
Its likely Secure Boot will be the thing it requires, as in Win 11 the PC just needs to be able to enable it. They might just push that to the next obvious step in 12. So if PC can install Win 11, it probably run win 12
Microsoft generally give hardware makers a chance... there would need to be more Desktops with NPU in existance now before it would make sense to release an OS that relies on the feature. I expect AMD could add one on next gen desktop but we need about 5 years or so with more hardware support before you can enforce it.
Unless you are correct. Its too soon to know for sure.
The current performance needs can still be addressed by incorporating a GPU equipped with sufficient nVidia Tensor cores or AMD Matrix cores. These components can perform equivalent tasks, albeit less efficiently, meaning they consume significantly more power. This approach excludes potential buyers of non-upgradeable laptops, All-in-Ones, or NUCs at the moment. However, Lenovo recently demonstrated an NPU on a USB stick, suggesting other possibilities will emerge before Windows 12 is released. With Windows 11 set to launch, there will likely be at least a 25H2 update available. Additionally, the forthcoming AMD RDNA 4 GPUs are expected to match the AI capabilities of the nVidia RTX 4000 series, only being a generation behind. They offer up to eight times greater speed for AI tasks compared to the RDNA 3 RX 7000 series. Previously released APUs such as the AMD Strix Point and Intel Lunar Lake already feature strong NPUs. Given the increasing emphasis on AI in new 3D and desktop processors, it's likely that these improvements will continue quickly. The Ultra 7 265k mentioned earlier, along with the 265HX, may not boast excellent NPU performance, but the 265H is notable. NPUs are expected to serve as key differentiators, allowing manufacturers to adjust pricing strategies effectively.
