I was repairing my friend's laptop charger and discovered a damaged component. The label on the circuit board reads "2.5D-9".

From the top of the leads layout I'd guess a varistor.

That works, so you can connect the wires instead of swapping the varistor? Or should you go ahead and replace it altogether?
