It really varies for me. Most games I skip since they detract from the experience. But I definitely won’t play Banjo Kazooie without save points. When I was 12 I had more free time, but I can’t go back to collect all 98 notes because I almost died near the end of a level. No one has time for that. I only rely on them because I believe save states don’t necessarily make the game easier—they just prevent wasted effort.

States were perfect for games with many branching choices you wanted to revisit. On Megaman X3 I saved to bypass the intro and jump straight to the main stage, another pair saved just before the final stages—one with all upgrades, one without, a save right before the final boss, and another immediately after a dialogue choice. This made it easier to retry and helped me forget about past saves.
