I've been using my G.SKILL ripjaws 2666 at 2666mhz for several months now. I'm curious if lowering it would help or if it's okay as is. It's set to the XMP preset on the ASUS Maximus viii hero motherboard.

Alright cool, still getting used to a lot of things. I’m trying to do some character customization but feel a bit unsure. I’ve done some graphics card tweaks with MSI Afterburner, but it doesn’t seem to really help improve my games, so I don’t even turn it on. The improvements from mild overclocking are minimal. Still, overclocking just for the sake of it doesn’t make much difference. You should only overclock a component if it’s limiting the rest of the system and you can benefit from the extra speed.

Regarding your RAM, keeping XMP enabled isn’t the same as overclocking. The XMP setting is the speed the RAM is designed to run at.

The RAM is designed to maintain its performance at the specified XMP speeds. It can withstand some physical stress and voltage variations without lasting damage, though extreme conditions may cause issues. The motherboard itself is solid, so voltage spikes are unlikely to affect the RAM. If XMP profiles were problematic, it would likely prevent the motherboard from supporting it.

Sure, you're feeling a bit unsure about making changes yourself. It's normal to feel that way, especially if you've tried using tools like MSI Afterburner without seeing big improvements in your games.
