I have an AMD Ryzen 5 7600X with a 64GB SSD, MSI Pro B650-P WiFi (model MS-7D78). I’m considering adding more RAM since my current setup is 64GB. I recently bought four 32GB Corsair modules and everything seems to function properly. However, once I exceed 64GB, the system won’t boot. The CPU and memory headers show solid red and yellow. I understand the chip supports up to 128GB, but I’m not sure what’s missing. All RAM appears correctly installed, memory tests on both sticks passed, and all slots are functional. The BIOS is up-to-date. I haven’t used more than 64GB before, so there might be something in the BIOS I should adjust. If you have any suggestions, it would be really helpful. Thanks!

AM5 doesn't support four RAM sticks, making it hard to ship them all together. That's why DDR5 packages like two 48GB units are becoming popular for higher memory capacity with just two sticks.

It seems you're questioning the necessity of 128GB RAM for a budget device. You'd likely prefer investing in better speed instead.

Before that, I had four sticks at 16GB each without any issues. It seemed fine, but I appreciated the advice. Since the maximum capacity was 128GB, I thought it could still work. However, even three sticks failed.

I mistakenly placed an order for 32GBx4 in 6400 RAM instead of the intended 16x4 configuration. I tried to adapt, but the specs suggested a maximum of 128GB. Still, I figured it wouldn’t be a problem. I’ll likely need this eventually at some point. Another concern is that even three sticks won’t upload properly.

Do you require it later? How do you manage your machine with more than 64GB RAM? Also, are you using the EXPO standard or just the base JEDEC?

Probably, cant say one way or the other. As for what i do, its all gaming. And mostly that choice was because i grabbed the wrong size as stated prior. as for the xmp/ expo. I copied this post on reddit and someone there recommended i turn off xmp/expo and try all 4. Still didnt post. thing is where the xmp/expo is. It now shows a-xmp. With 3 options 2 users but only 1 option is selectable. but since things seem to need to be pushed elsewhere before i can even consider the use of ram, ill just take it back and upgrade the processor. Or grab some more space for my nas. this whole thing was more future proofing than anything. Hell the machine is only 2 years old at this point. Anyways appreciate the help.

For gaming you only require up to 64GB, at most. If you aim for a slight edge (32 is average, 64 if you really push it, and 128 isn't necessary), you're free to spend however you like. I don’t believe in the idea of needing it later—this setup isn’t for me. Perhaps another build in 5 to 10 years? Maybe. But having 128GB right now is a waste of money for this rig. Now I’ve spoken, and if you want to invest, go all in.
