Hello everyone, I’m in need of a fresh GPU. I currently own a PNY 12GB 4070 Ti. It failed during high settings playthroughs of Runescape Dragon Wilds, which I believed it could handle. Luckily, none of my other components were affected.
My current setup includes:
- CPU: Ryzen 9 7950X
- Motherboard: MSI B650 Tomahawk
- RAM: 64GB DDR5 6400mhz (2 x 32GB)
- SSD: 4TB
- PSU: 850w – though after researching the two GPUs, I’m thinking about upgrading to a 1200w unit from NZXT to guarantee sufficient power.
As previously discussed, my old GPU was a PNY 12GB 4070 Ti, which I had for three years.
The two GPUs under consideration are:
- NVIDIA 4090 series
- Sapphire Nitro AMD 7900 XTX
I’ve spoken to two friends: one recommended the 4090, while another advised against the AMD 7000 series due to compatibility issues with Black Ops 6. They suggested aiming for a 50 series model, though there are more negative reviews than positive ones.
I have a budget of around $3,000 and am saving extra funds. I’m just seeking an honest perspective on whether I should pursue the 4090 or the Sapphire Nitro 7900 XTX.

The issue occurred when I played the new Runescape dragon wilds game on high settings. The GPU's connector melted or the GPU failed. If the connector is the main problem, ensure the 12v-2x6 harness is properly seated at both ends of the PSU and GPU.
You mentioned having a 3k budget and saving extra money.
Where are you located and which site do you prefer for purchases?
Regarding the 5000 series, it’s best to avoid it as it’s worsening for Nvidia due to driver issues. If you have the RTX4090, that’s the better option, though AMD doesn’t offer a direct equivalent.
What resolution or refresh rate do you use for gaming? And which other games plan to stress your proposed GPU?

According to the team at metapcs, I brought it to them since I live in Arizona, and unfortunately the GPU stopped working.
I’ve been cautious about websites because many third-party sellers have raised concerns with unreliable reviews or bad reputations. I checked Amazon, Newegg, and Stock X. Newegg still has a few items available, though they’re a bit above my budget at the moment (over 3300$).
I use a 1440p monitor with a Quantum dot OLED that runs at 360hz from MSI.
My main games are Call of Duty and Greyzone Warfare, and I also enjoy base-building survival titles.
I’m mainly considering this because I know the 4090 is a problematic card, but they’re being phased out to make space for the 50 series. It would be better to try getting a 4090 if possible, or it’s okay to go with the 7900xtx, which has good reviews but sometimes driver updates can cause problems.
if you can afford it, choose the RX 5090 – there’s really nothing to beat it
the top card (7900xtx) lags about 35% during rasterization at 1440p and performance drops further
using advanced features like RT or comparing DLSS4 versus older FSR3 isn’t worth it – it’s just a discussion
even the RX 4090 is only 15% slower than the 7900xtx in rasterization at 1440p and offers better capabilities
activating ray tracing on the RX 4090 gives an average 30% speed boost compared to the 7900xtx
be sure to install a suitable power supply – you’ll need it for the RX 5090 or 4090
you might also want to upgrade your CPU to the 9800X3D, as the 7950X isn’t ideal for gaming
with the 4090, your FPS could rise around 10% at 1440p, and the low-end performance improvements will be even more noticeable
(though this upgrade isn’t essential – the 7950X remains a strong CPU and you’d actually lose efficiency in some apps)

Thank you for your feedback, I value it. I ordered a 1200w and I can definitely look into the 9800x3d. I’ve heard that the CPU was a great gaming choice. However, I wasn’t sure what to purchase when setting up this PC, which is why I’m conducting my own research and consulting more experienced individuals.
I have the 7900xtx nitro in my PC, and it performs well for 1440p and most 4K titles.
4090 or 5090 might be quicker, but they’re also more costly and prone to overheating.
They’re still the top choice overall.
You can’t really make a mistake either way.
