What are the best GPU upgrade recommendations?
Hi everyone,
I mainly rely on my computer for photo and video editing, VFX, and 3D projects. My current setup includes:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core (3.70 GHz)
RAM: G.Skill F4-3600C18D-64GTZN (64GB)
Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING (WI-FI)
GPU: ASUS ROG-STRIX-RTX3060TI-O8G-V2-GAMING
NVMe: Samsung 980 PRO
HDD: Seagate 2TB & WD Red Plus 4TB
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black
PSU: Corsair RM850x
I’m considering an upgrade to a graphics card and am deciding between these options:
ASUS ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5080 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition
and
ASUS ProArt GeForce RTX 5080 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition.
Which one suits my workflow best?
I would have preferred the ASUS ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5090 32GB GDDR7 OC Edition, but it’s quite costly.
Also, I’m planning to replace my power supply with the Seasonic PRIME TX-1300 ATX 3.1.
Because of the higher clocks on the Astral, you'll notice minor changes in the numbers displayed on the ProArt card.
Which option suits your workflow best?
If your motherboard and case were built with ProArt components, I'd suggest choosing the ProArt card.
For the power supply, it should work fine for now.
The discussion has been shifted from the Systems section to the Graphics Cards section.
I noticed you referenced a 5900x image right away and recalled this article.
Okay.
What do you mean if my system all ProArt?
Just to clarify what you meant by the ProArt motherboard/case comment:
Are you referring purely to ecosystem / aesthetics and consistency of the ProArt lineup, or is there any actual performance, communication, or optimization benefit between a ProArt motherboard + ProArt GPU?
In other words, if someone had a ProArt motherboard and case and paired them with a ProArt GPU, would there be any tangible performance or workflow advantage, or is it mainly about design language, acoustics, and target audience rather than technical synergy?
Just to clarify, I don’t use the system for gaming at all.
My workload is focused on photo/video editing, VFX, and 3D, where the GPU is heavily utilized in rendering, compute, and acceleration tasks rather than high-FPS, CPU-bound scenarios.
From my understanding, in these types of workloads the Ryzen 9 5900X should not meaningfully limit an RTX 5080, as the bottleneck characteristics are quite different compared to gaming.
