Weird internet situation
she has an Xfinity modem/router in the downstairs living room and she resides on the second floor. Her mom isn’t keen on running an Ethernet cable all the way from the living room to her room, so I installed a Wi-Fi extender with an Ethernet port on the bottom of her stairs, placed it in a room away from her modem/router. I connected it all the way up to her room, where it linked into a second router for wireless VR. This setup works well for her local connection.
Her internet connection is unstable—frequent drops and Discord freezes every about twenty minutes. I’m curious about the Wi-Fi plan her mom uses, but I’m considering buying two Xfinity mesh network extenders from the living room and placing them in her room to see if that improves things.
Wireless extenders boost coverage but can actually weaken network speed since data travels through the air multiple times. Your setup likely doesn’t spread Wi-Fi efficiently from downstairs to upstairs, as it only moves once. The process of data traveling through the air doesn’t help performance. Try searching for "powerline ethernet adapter" for a better solution. Using existing wiring is probably more effective than your current setup.
theres a wireless range extender about 15 ft from her xfinity modem a room over, then i plugged an Ethernet cord into the range extender and routed it up to her room into an netgear router then an Ethernet into her pc, and for the powerline adapter she has old wiring in that house probably 20 years old and her room probably isnt on the same side of the breaker as the modem room i was thinking about a mesh network but im not to network savvy and dont know if either powerline or mesh network would be better to try first.
