Hey everyone, just finished setting up a PC for my grandma. It’s mainly for browsing the web—Facebook, YouTube, Skype, Scrabble. I went with an MSI AM1I motherboard, AMD 5350 APU, SanDisk 128GB SSD, and 8GB Gskill RAM on Windows 8.1 Standard. I expected it would handle those apps smoothly, but Chrome is really slow compared to Internet Explorer, even though IE isn’t great either. Anyone know why it feels so sluggish? I thought a fresh build with plenty of RAM would work well for web browsing. Thanks!

Update the drivers and if this works, I’ll realize I might get criticized. Install an ad blocker. Some people oppose it, but for someone who isn’t very tech-savvy, it stops them from clicking on fake download links and other scam ads that often lead to malware quickly.

It seems you're emphasizing the importance of choosing a great gran for using and opting for an SSD over an HDD.

I focused on Chrome since it came to mind, like checking if I needed to update the motherboard BIOS. All the Windows updates were done too.

She won’t save much space but will grumble about the slowness, haha—she’s earned a better deal!

Verify if Windows recognizes all available RAM. Ensure it's set to AHCI mode—look in the BIOS under boot options if it lists AHCI or IDE. If it's in IDE mode, you'll need to reinstall Windows.

Yeah it's definitely detecting all the ram I checked that after the install, I didn't get an option to install in any mode when I ran the installer but I'll check that tonight. Noob question but what's the difference? Thanks for the reply

AHCI offers superior speed and is the recommended choice. Installation isn’t optional—select it in BIOS before installing Windows.

It would influence the entire PC operation, not limited to web browsers.
