We require an exceptional new MMO.
We require an exceptional new MMO.
I've been revisiting Log Horizon, and it struck me. The MMORPG segment has missed fresh content lately—something you wouldn't waste hours on if it weren't exciting. We're more drawn to games like MOBAs, FPS titles, platformers, and walking simulators. Yet MMORPGs have only managed a weak effort with a big-budget launch (TESO). The developers who craft a solid new MMO should earn their pay. Key elements include:
- Well-defined roles within classes (heal, tank, support, etc.)
- Balanced class trees that shape a player's path (e.g., a warrior can switch to tank or damage dealer)
- Fair class balance so no single build dominates
- Strong party and guild mechanics
- Effective marketing and monetization strategies (avoid pay-to-win, skip heavy upfront costs, no monthly fees)
There’s so much more to cover—I might have 20 ideas in mind. Feel free to share your thoughts or suggest some fantasy MMORPGs you enjoy. And yes, I’m a sad fan of this genre.
The worst a studio can do is intentionally aim to become "the new WoW," as it’s likely to fail. Blizzard’s massive MMO is special, trying to copy it is a mistake. We should focus on a fresh niche offering that grabs interest without relying on subscriptions. No MMO will ever surpass WoW, and they shouldn’t try to. I’m open to a unique MMO experience tailored for players.
