I'm trying to gather all my gaming collections onto my PC using emulators. So far, I have my PS2, GBA, and many other titles easily stored on my hard drive. However, I really want to focus on the Halo series and, even though it might sound odd, I’m curious if there’s an Xbox 360 emulator available. I don’t like Microsoft cutting off PC support or making exclusive deals for their consoles. My goal is to get rid of or trade away old devices I no longer need—like the Xbox 360—and share my original copies with people who value owning a physical game.
There’s a great emulator available for both platforms, and these products are offered by the manufacturers. In reality, though, creating an emulator for X360/PS3 games is unlikely because their design differs significantly from PC systems. Running such an emulator would likely be very inefficient if it ever works.
The 360 featured a triple-core Cell chip. The PS3 functioned as a 7-core Cell processor. Although many were unaware of this detail, the Cell architecture presented significant challenges to engineers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_%28microprocessor%29
I was talking about today, right? Maybe in ten years a 5960x will be common in our watches.
Working on PS3 and 360 proved more challenging than previous systems, according to what I've learned. It looks like the design is quite unusual, which likely contributed to some of the poor ports from the latest generation. Nonetheless, PCs are advancing rapidly, so it wouldn't be surprising to see a PS3 emulator become feasible in the near future.
