Looking for a WDS or mesh/bridge setup. Saw Linus demoing ASUS routers with AiMesh. Planning to buy two ASUS routers instead of jumping straight in. Had Netgear R6220 which has a wireless repeater/WDS option, but wanted a second unit. Tried DDWRT on Linksys and another Netgear model—links worked but bandwidth was limited. Netgear DDWRT version felt unreliable. Need a wired connection between two computers that can’t be directly linked to the router/modem. Wanting to know if ASUS AiMesh or another option works better.

Typically, every time you adjust something, the bandwidth is reduced by half

You're considering a setup where the base uses an Ubiquiti wireless uplink, with a wired segment in the basement and wireless uplinks above for other connected devices. What budget and speed expectations did you have in mind?

I was hoping to purchase a second R6220 for around $76 and finish the job. If I can manage, I might allocate about $400 to upgrade the entire setup. Performance-wise, my current connection offers only 25mbps down and 10mbps up, so I’m likely aiming for lower latency. Plus, I expect several mobile devices to connect via Wi-Fi at any time.
