WD Black SN850X SSD offers 8TB capacity in M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 slot, built for Asus Prime B650 Plus systems.
Hello, I looked through the forum but didn’t find any information about the WD SN850X 8TB M.2 with Asus Prime B650-plus. After purchasing the SSD, it appears in Windows as 512 GB and in the BIOS as 512 GB. It displays the model number WDS500G1XHE-00AFY0. I suspect I might be the only one with this specific setup, similar to the B650. The unit was bought at Proshop in Denmark, one of Europe’s biggest retailers, so I doubt it’s a fake or incorrect drive. I also noticed the model number shows 'wds800t2xhe - 00cdd0' which seems correct.
I checked the product page on Proshop.dk and confirmed the SSD is listed as 8TB M.2. I’ve updated the Asus Prime B650-plus to the latest firmware and BIOS, but after installing the WD Dashboard, the drive still shows 512 GB. I’m not sure if this is due to an OS issue, since others on Reddit suggested it might be a hardware problem. I tested booting into several Linux distributions and disabled SATA completely, changed Secure Boot settings, and tried toggling CSM, but nothing changed. No evidence it’s bigger than 512 GB.
Could the WD800T2XHE model not be compatible with the Asus Prime B650-plus? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’ve ordered two adapters to test and a Hyper Drive Next USB4 NVMe M.2 SSD enclosure that supports up to 16 TB, plus a StarTech X4 PCIe SSD adapter card. In theory, it should work.
Best regards, Frank
It seems there might be confusion about the product specifications. If the motherboard identifies itself as a 500GB version, it’s unlikely such a modern chipset would ignore that detail. It could indicate a scam or an error in WD's documentation. Alternatively, a customer might have purchased a larger drive, altered the heatsink, and returned it without proper verification, leading to potential issues if not checked by retailers.
Yeah if this is a amazon or other big retailer (like yours you used) with a ez return policy program then you got scammed where someone swaps their smaller drive for a bigger one. It's common and a easy scam to pull that basically never gets caught.
Thanks guys for the .. humm pseudo optimistic answers It's about take everything as optimistic as possible in these times I tested the ssd in a 16 tb supported extern encloser today. One that runs usb4 and thunderbolt. Should support all new ssd’s. I tested it in macos, linux (parrot and kali) and windows 11. All still shows the ssd as only 512 gb. But I can’t see much information when using that device compared with mounting it directly on the mvme on the motherboard. It is the controller serial and model that shows up and not the ssd. So I expect it just show what ever partition that is made om the ssd. Properly not the most useful device for troubleshooting. I actually tried to make a case with wd/sandisk and call, but it was not available for Denmark because of some service maintenance it said on their site. Same in most EU. The only thing I managed to do was to reach a supporter on a chat. Much to my surprise it was not an AI chatbot… The serial number that the WD Dashboard software shows turns out to be indeed a 8TB even it think's the model number is a 512 gb. So Proshop didn’t send me the wrong ssd and no one did a switch of the ssd sticker. That much he could confirm, but that was pretty much the only useful information I could get. But the software can’t pull the correct information as it writes a lot of errors in the logs even that it looks as it is working in the gui. I have of course made sure that my firewall and pi-hole have allowed the traffic so that is not the problem. And I have a really stable internet connection that are even overkill for my only 1 Gbit ethernet. It seams to be related to the software it self. Sometimes it can reach the server and sometimes not. But I don’t think that is the problem it self. I uninstalled all WD software inc. the Dashboard software before installing it again. Several times. But still the same. And I did it again starting all over, so I could generate a fresh support file for when I was chatting with the supporter. In the support file that the software can generate it is supposed to show the link to the firmware based on the serial number and the ssd model, but it sais it is up to date in the gui. When generating the support file in the dashboard.log I am supposed to see the link to the .fluf firmware file but there is nothing. Just a bunch of errors related to the software and apparently it seams to install as a service as well. So I wanted to get the direct link to the firmware so I would install it manually. Just to make sure I don’t waste time returning the ssd to Proshop and getting a new. I suspect that the same problem could be the case again when I get a new. And it will take me 2 - 3 weeks I know for sure with Proshop. When I look in https://wddashboarddownloads.wdc.com/wdD...evices.xml I see no 8000gb / 8tb or anything related to my exact ssd. My model is exactly: WDS800T2XHE-00CDD0 An example here for a 4000gb: https://wddashboarddownloads.wdc.com/wdD...erties.xml https://wddashboarddownloads.wdc.com/wdD...241WD.fluf The supporter was not rude, that was at least something, but I got the feeling that they just want to move on to next customer hoping that is it something easy. He keep saying that they don’t know the link, but I should be able to find it under the dashboard.log. Seams he was just reading from this support page: https://support-en.sandisk.com/app/answe...a_id/52308 So another useless support service. I am not surprised at all. I am more surprised that they haven’t switched completely to AI bots yet. Any ideas? Cheers,
