It seems the main issue was the creation of big thumbnails of people's bookmarks, which made sharing computers more noticeable and caused embarrassment. Some might argue this isn't true, but it still appears to be a valid concern.

I disliked it. I can read, but I don’t want tiny images on websites that are hard to see often.

I saw the update and quickly switched back to the basic design by visiting 'chrome://flags/#enhanced-bookmarks-experiment' and turning off 'Enhanced Bookmarks'. The revised view didn’t include an alphabetical sorting feature either.
