I was just running stress tests and tweaking my fan curves during this situation. FYI, I have a delidded 8700k @ 5Ghz. I've had this issue for a couple of months now and didn't experience it before I did the OC. The usual gaming temps are about 65C. I don't do any other activities that require higher heat.
The peak core temp reached 85 with an average of around 70. It never even throttled—it stopped the test on its own.
Does this suggest my OC is unstable or is there a more serious concern?
Update: Raising the core voltage by 0.005 resolved everything again.

The usual gaming temps are about 65C, and I don't run any other high-temperature tasks. The peak core temp reached 85 with an average of around 70. It never throttled; the system shut down on its own. This seems to indicate an unstable OC, though increasing the voltage could shorten the CPU's lifespan.

It's likely you were correct about the CPU's stability. Over the past few months, it has shown slight degradation, making it unstable due to clock and voltage issues.
