WAN help!
Hey, I hope someone can assist me. I’ve been following your YouTube channel regularly and thought if you’re not aware, I might lose interest! My setup includes a cable modem linked to a UDMPro, which connects to a managed 24-port switch. This switch then distributes the network through Cat5e throughout the house. Some areas have unmanaged Netgear switches with gaming consoles, TVs, and devices like Roku or laptops. The UDMPro also provides four access points for reliable Wi-Fi (thank you Unifi!). All these components are housed in a single rack in one room. We’re considering adding a second ISP as a backup or to balance traffic since the UDMPro can handle that.
My concern is installing new fiber-optic equipment elsewhere in the house. My immediate thought was, “Oh no, I need to run Cat5e from the other side of the house to the UDMPro—nightmare!” Could there be a way to route the WAN using existing tools like VLAN or port forwarding through the managed switches? Or would I have to set up a completely separate Cat5e connection?
Appreciate any advice or suggestions!
This method involves a process called VLAN tagging. First, link the new ONT to one of the managed switch ports. Then set up a new VLAN on the switch and assign the connected port to that VLAN. Set up UDMPro to detect this VLAN and use it for WAN connectivity. Ensure the ONT matches the VLAN ID created on the switch. Once configured, you can route WAN traffic through the existing network without needing additional cabling.
