Hi, I'm making the switch from W8.1 to W10 Pro on my new rig. I remember privacy concerns were big when W10 launched—so many settings and programs that could potentially break the OS. Now that it's been a while, what settings are suggested? Are there any tools available to secure the system and avoid future issues in 2018? What steps have others taken to protect their setup and reduce security risks? Thanks!
I really like Shutup 10 (https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10/). It offers features to turn off nearly anything, from Windows updates to various data transmission services. Others also recommend Spybot Anti-Beacon (https://www.safer-networking.org/spybot-anti-beacon/).
I really wanted a reliable program that had worked well before, so I’m being patient. I’ll test it after my new hardware arrives. Thanks for agreeing—I was counting on the extra cost for Pro to give me better control over Windows updates. Agreed, I’m trying DuckDuckGo as a search engine and I’m not using Facebook at all.
Keep in mind that O&O shuts up and the rest are just "theater apps." They create the illusion of extra privacy, but the truth is different. They only let you see Start > Settings (gear icon), Privacy, and turn off certain features. You can adjust it yourself and tailor it to your needs. Windows clearly explains what each feature does and how disabling it affects things.
