W10 isn't reaching W7, but W7 is able to reach W10 – all firewalls have been turned off
Hey everyone, I'm facing yet another frustrating issue where Windows network shares fail completely without any clear reason. My W10 workstation can't reach the W7 server, even though the server responds to it and others. This isn’t the first time something like this happens—most security updates have already been applied. The current setup lacks password sharing, uses 40-bit encryption, permits insecure guest logins, doesn’t support digital signatures, and all these safeguards are disabled. After disabling firewalls and router protection, the problem persists. I’m stuck trying to move files or work efficiently, and I can’t rely on standard methods. Any suggestions on alternative solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Check if your device can reach the router quickly and see if it connects to the wider network.
Yes, it is possible. I have full internet connectivity. The setup includes a standard CAT6 cable through an HP Enterprise switch and a Linksys router, which also serves as the primary internet gateway. The second method uses a pair of Mellanox ConnectX2 devices connected via a long SFP cable with all necessary priority configurations—right out of Linus's guide. Both approaches have functioned reliably, with only occasional issues.
Do you know if the client has two NICs connected to the same workgroup?
Updated the post with NIC details. Not naive—I’ve handled similar fixes before, like when resetting everyone back to the default workgroup resolved a connection problem. Both are currently using the workgroup setting. Simple, no complications.
That sounds like a great setup for your home. It’s impressive how much you know! Did you try running those commands to release and flush DNS settings?
I adjusted the settings manually to a suitable format, omitted the default gateway and filled in DNS servers randomly—though validation still fails. It works fine because this link isn’t reaching the internet. Interestingly, after making these changes, both RJ45 and SFP connections can be pinged from W10 to W7. The odd behavior of Windows is noted. Sincerely thank you, good sir.
