I don't think many people share this problem, but it seems my GTX 970's 3.7GB of VRAM isn't sufficient for 1080p. For instance, when using AC Unity with full settings and AA off, I see around 3.7GB usage but only 40 frames per second. When I lower the settings to use between 3 and 3.5GB, the frame rate jumps back up to over 60fps. In GTA V, everything runs smoothly at 60fps even in 1080p, yet it still consumes 3.7GB of VRAM. Not every game behaves this way, and most require very little memory. I know these are top-tier titles, but they're still cutting-edge today! How will my 3.7GB handle future games when everyone claims you only need under 2GB for 1080p? I realize hitting 3.5GB on a 970 causes slowdowns and drops the frame rate, but at 1080p it shouldn't reach that level. If anyone has thoughts on this, that would be helpful. I feel like this model might not last long.

Likely related to how the game implements the Maxwell architecture.

I believe it's okay up to around 3.7GB since the Windows desktop consumes roughly 200MB from the slower VRAM.

You bought a graphics card with faulty VRAM because it was more affordable, even though another model like the R9 290/290x works just as well and fully utilizes its capabilities.

For the majority of games I believe 3GB would suffice at 1080p. However, many titles are increasingly demanding more memory. It looks like 4GB would be ideal for 1080p, but with your card at around 3.5GB, it falls short...

Reduce advanced options in GTA V. Optimization quality is poor.

Optimize performance by reducing advanced options. GTA can handle full VRAM, even with high-end cards, so lower settings work better for 1080p. These extra features mainly benefit 4K displays.

It's uncertain if the GTX 970 will become outdated soon.

Sure, it sounds like you're suggesting most games in the coming years should be fine, yet you discovered an extreme situation.

Indeed, it is accurate, but at 1080p quality it shouldn’t be requiring close to 3.7GB? Most people claim you only need 2–3 GB of VRAM for such games.
