It’s unclear if VR can be played with an Ocolus rift S on Ubuntu. You mentioned using Proton for games, but Ocolus has its own software—no download links found for Linux. You might need to check their official resources or contact support for options. Thanks GameTec_live.

No, Ocolus doesn’t require the ocoulus app to function. Before Steam VR you can still use it.

Oculus doesn't offer support for Linux, and using the wrong headset model can prevent you from playing games on that system.

I installed Oculus Rift on Linux Mint 20.3 via the provided GitHub link. The main challenges during OpenHMD installation were incorrect file paths, which required using libopenvr-dev.

Using any Oculus product on Linux is essentially impossible. The nearest option is the Rift CV1 paired with OpenHMD, though it remains largely incomplete. As for the Rift S, it’s still mostly nonfunctional.
