>Is within VM >Gives me upgrade option What do. I'm not the most experienced with VMWare, but I'm pretty sure I can't overwrite the host OS accidentally, right?

Check within the VM unless you've already imported necessary files.

It’s nice that you’re managing a VM; you can test upgrades to see how they affect things. A VM operates independently from the host OS unless connected to your physical storage... but you should be okay.

For WMware Workstation you must perform a tailored installation because no previous operating system is available for upgrade, unless you run setup.exe inside a Windows 8/8.1 virtual machine. To successfully launch the installation, configure it to expect a Windows 8 OS; choosing "Other 64-bit" will lead to device initialization errors. Source: Writing this on my W10 VM, lol.

Allowed features include options beyond the standard selection during VM creation; these can be adjusted later via Settings > Hard Disk > Use physical disk.

I understand, the installation proceeded without issues. The update was included in the post because it seemed like an option was available.

Upgrade from version 8. The W8 tech preview remained unchanged, offering an upgrade path from version 7. In a virtual environment this is practical, unless you prefer not to spin up a fresh VM; otherwise it works well for real hardware testing.

It's a Type 2 hypervisor. It shouldn't affect your host machine (your PC). Upgrading might cause issues, so avoid it unless necessary.
