The issue appears to stem from compatibility problems between KDE Plasma 5 and VMware environments. Check for known conflicts or updates that address KDE in virtual machines. If the problem persists, consider testing in a different VMware setup or checking system logs for more details.
I had a similar situation with Plasma X11 a while ago. It hasn’t been my experience with Linux in a virtual machine for over a year now, so I can’t give an accurate picture. From what I recall, VMWare Workstation performed better with OpenGL than VirtualBox—though I think LLVMpipe was still an issue back then.
Wayland versions appear to cause fewer crashes with Kwin, though they might introduce some minor glitches. The cursor in full Wayland looks slightly off-center, which can be annoying but doesn’t change. Under normal Plasma running on Xorg, Xorg tends to crash more, while Wayland seems to have a few issues.
