Vintage power supply featuring four-pin EPS connectors installed on a modern setup with eight plus four EPS ports
Hello, I recently upgraded my setup with an MSI x470 Gaming Pro Max and a Ryzen 5 3600, but I kept my PSU (LC Power LC6600GP2 v2.3 600W) since it was reliable and not heavily used. I noticed now that the PSU only provides a 4-pin EPS cable for the CPU, while my new motherboard has both PWR1 (8-pin) and PWR2 (4-pin) connectors. My question is whether it’s possible to use the 4-pin connector with the motherboard. If so, which type should I use? Can I connect a 4-pin EPS adapter to the PSU instead? Are there any downsides to using a 4-pin or an adapter? Thanks ahead!
In general, the PC won't start unless all eight pins are connected. Using fewer pins is strongly discouraged; drawing too much power could damage components or cause a fire. A proper 4+4 power supply is recommended, or you'll face many problems. Also, I noticed a 4+4 listed in the specs for that PSU—maybe the model number was mixed up?
yeah that's one of the reasons i decided not to buy a new PSU. I saw the Specs online and taught it was fine but now when i opened the case and removed the PSU saw that it only has one 4 pin cable, don't know why.... (and the model name i gave is what is in the PSU sticker). I guess i will have to buy a new PSU... (any sugestions?) Thank You
The maximum budget would be about 80€. I'm from Portugal and usually shop at two PC stores here—PCDiga and Globaldata—that offer great deals, sometimes more than in malls. I also own a GTX 1660 Super (here are some pictures of the PSU). Edit: I forgot to include the photo.
I believe these two PSUs are the top choices: https://www.globaldata.pt/fonte-be-quiet...gold-bn293 and https://www.globaldata.pt/fonte-semi-mod...lver-bn278. The second model offers more GPU connectors. Both support a 4+4 pin configuration, which is ideal. The second 4pin (PWR2) isn't essential but can be useful in specific setups.
