I’ve started downsizing my old gaming collection. I’m ditching XP and now using 32-bit Windows 7 for retro games, which means fewer computers around. I also transferred all my games from their cases into a binder to save space. Of course, I’m letting go of dozens of cases—do I really have to throw them away?
Back then I stopped using those PC game boxes. They really consume a lot of space, and it looks like few people actually need that kind of stuff anymore. Now I still keep the jewel cases and similar items. They actually safeguard the disks better. I also have the artwork included with them. Not that I ever intend to sell anything from my collection, but having the cases would make things easier and more valuable if I ever acquire something worth keeping. Personally I understand how they take up space, but I’d hold onto them if possible.
These situations are especially straightforward to handle. As long as the discs remain secure, their location doesn’t matter. I might even check out the brochures. By now, history feels like a distant concept, and those classic covers won’t return. That’s why I’m also disappointed we discarded old boxes from the late-90s.
They use plastic containers or the old cardboard ones. The plastic ones let you remove the paper and insert them into a binder. Still, I always keep my Morrowind case.
