Similar to last year, the board caused POST errors when using 3600MHz RAM from two different makers. It worked fine with 3200MHz or less, of course. Someone should confirm if others faced this problem. Has the BIOS fixed it? Also, would you like to try running dual 3600MHz dual-rank RAM sticks if you decide to proceed?
It seems CPU memory controller plays a big role in determining memory speed options. For another point, DDR5 wouldn't behave this way because the controller moved to the DIMM. Thanks for the fix @AbydosOne. A faulty BIOS can still influence memory performance. For detailed advice, it's usually better to consult a particular brand and model instead of just the chipset. Avoid using a standard RAM module listed in the board's specifications.
It's probably not addressed to the board, more likely the IMC on the CPU. But it should work fine.
I didn't encounter any POST errors that caused failures when using the same RAM on other boards with XMP 3600MHz settings. The VRM tier list notes mention SOC VRM separating two banks of Vcore, which seems relevant for the B550-E. That might help explain the behavior you're seeing. I'm not seeking extreme overclocks, but I think it's possible to run at 3600MHz or a bit higher with lower timings if the components are suitable.
Issue appears on Asus' website where every RAM kit shown on QVL has a 4000MHz or higher speed. Does this imply they ensure compatibility for slower speeds? This seems true for Dark Hero as well, appearing as a B Die kit not listed on QVL. On G.Skill's site, B550-E is listed as available on their QVL.
they maintain a catalog of SKUs they evaluated with the board. you simply purchase the identical item shown on that list. this provides a straightforward method to verify whether the board is the source of the issue or if the problem lies elsewhere.
