Hi everyone, I received a used BT Openreach VDSL modem today. I powered it on and connected the DSL cable to the modem. Then I attached an Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port on my Linksys router. Following the ISP’s PPPoE instructions, I’m still unable to access the internet. The router won’t connect to the ISP. When I switch the modem to bridged mode, it works immediately. If the modem is in bridged mode, it should function too, but it doesn’t. Any suggestions? My ISP isn’t BT, but that shouldn’t matter since the modem is converting the analog DSL signal into an Ethernet output. Thanks, Bruno.

Your internet service provider account should reflect the most recent details of your modem.

The modem cannot be handled, and the PPPoE configuration is managed by the router.

Review your ISP's site for an approved modem list. You might have purchased an incorrect device, or there could be compatibility issues—BT may also install proprietary firmware that restricts other providers.

I’m still figuring out which part belongs to which, but today marked my final day at work. My boss gave me a used VDSL DrayTek modem/router combo for free. I hooked up the cable and set it up as a PPPoE passthrough to the LAN ports—it worked perfectly. This setup is similar to what I was using, except my router only provided 28Mbps instead of the expected 40Mbps, which is already quite slow. The new DrayTek bridge I’m using now delivers full speed, so it’s a relief.
