Hi everyone! I own an Acer Aspire A515-51G laptop equipped with Intel Core i5-8250u, Nvidia GeForce MX150 2GB GDDR5, a 1TB WD Blue HDD, and a 240 GB M.2 WD Green SSD with a 4GB module. I recently added 16GB of 2400MHz RAM into the only slot that originally came with a 4GB module. Previously, the dual-channel mode was enabled, but after installing the new RAM, CPUz still shows it as running in dual channel. I was worried the upgrade might force it to switch to single channel, but it seems to stay dual even with identical speeds and latencies. I’ve read that matching speed, size, and latency is necessary for dual-channel operation, but here it’s working differently. What should I do next?

You can keep using dual channel with memory sizes that don’t match, but it won’t run as smoothly. I once had 6GB of mismatched RAM in an old Pentium build; it lasted until the system failed (a 4GB DDR3 and a 2GB Kingston module, same speed).

The initial 4GB portion is paired with another 4GB drive. This gives you 8GB of RAM using dual-channel, with the remaining space in single-channel mode.

Reading or writing beyond 8 GB would slow down performance but still work. Older systems using dual channel with DDR2 faced issues with varying capacities, so they introduced hybrid dual-channel support long ago. This detail is a bit unclear, but I recall hearing about it in G41 (socket 775) chipsets from Intel and AMD around that era.

It could make a noticeable difference. The 12GB single channel offers more memory bandwidth, which may improve performance compared to the 8GB dual channel setup.

However, this isn't always clear. If your system has a solid-state drive, using dual channel along with less memory can be more efficient since the OS can swap unused data to the SSD.
