You can access Windows 7 Pro, 8 Pro, and 10 Educational at no cost through your college's DreamSpark. It depends on your needs—using the older versions might work if you don’t require the latest features, while upgrading to Windows 10 could offer better performance and support. Consider what software or updates are essential for your studies.

Install Windows 8 Pro, then proceed to the free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. It’s recommended to use the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool once your initial OS is confirmed active.

It seems you're wondering about the relevance of certain features in Windows 10 Education. You're considering whether these "free" options are worth it compared to paid versions. Your concern is valid—checking if you truly need them and if they justify the extra cost. If the information matches, you should be fine choosing Windows 10 Education.

I’m considering the education edition and think it’s a good choice. No negative info found online, and it shouldn’t interfere with gameplay.

Windows 10 Education offers all the features of Windows 10 Pro. It’s simpler than dealing with extra costs. The only potential hurdle is obtaining the DVD player codec separately, which would require spending around $15. If you skip that step and choose Windows 7 Pro with Media Center, you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free—just ensure the installation path is correct. Alternatively, you can purchase the Windows 10 version directly from the App Store for up to ten PCs using a single account.

You won't need a DVD/CD player since your PC already has one built in.

Well then no. You can try VLC, which is free. It doesn’t do great, but it works well enough. The only situation where Windows DVD Player stands out is when you’re looking for something better than VLC for playing DVDs, but you don’t want to spend money on alternatives like PowerDVD, which costs $50 and is very heavy.

Windows 7 remains the top choice for gaming currently due to its strong support for older titles. Among Windows 7, 8, and 10, the most valuable combinations are Windows 7 and 10, offering the broadest compatibility and features. Windows 10 can be upgraded from Windows 7 licenses, so choosing Windows 7 Pro also grants you free Windows 10 Pro. For everyday use, especially gaming, pairing Windows 7 Pro with Windows 10 Pro is likely more useful than sticking to Windows 10 Education alone. Some discussions suggest going for Windows 10 Home instead of Professional, but I believe a general user should opt for Professional rather than skipping out on Windows 7 entirely. The forum often leans toward defending Windows 10 as a way to counter criticism of older systems like Windows 7. Personal opinions vary, and there’s no clear reason to pick only one path without specific needs.
