V-Sync causing visual issues like stuttering and frame drops
Hey everyone, I've observed some performance changes lately. When V-sync is enabled in games like GTA V, I notice stutters and lower frame rates compared to when it's off. For instance, walking around Franklin's house in GTA V fluctuates between 55-60 fps with V-sync active, but stays above 75 fps without it. I've seen similar issues in Witcher 3, Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3. Is this a typical problem with V-sync? Could there be driver-related causes I should check? I just cleared and reinstalled my drivers with DDU today.
It's typical behavior. v-sync restricts your frame rate to match your monitor's refresh rate. So ideally it should stay at 60 FPS or less if your monitor runs at 60 Hz. Turning it off removes this limit, allowing it to exceed 60, though this can cause screen tearing if the display struggles to keep up with the GPU. Most users prefer keeping it on.
Be aware that if your GPU struggles to maintain 60fps, it will quickly drop to 30fps to avoid screen tearing, even briefly. This might be the stuttering you notice. I recommend using tools like Steam Overlay or FRAPS, CAM software to monitor FPS and identify any fluctuations.
It seems like V-Sync creates interruptions where there shouldn’t be any. Regarding resource consumption, my GPU and CPU aren’t being overburdened during those moments.
