Sure, you can set up a virtual machine using a USB flash drive with the necessary partitions installed. This allows you to run MacOSx without affecting your SSD.

You can place it wherever you like, but putting it on the SSD is ideal. It's just a file if it's installed on hardware, otherwise you can use a USB drive.

OS X can be placed on a flash drive that can be booted independently. This capability has been available for many years. I once installed OS X onto my Gen 1 iPod just for the sake of it. If you're using a virtual machine, it doesn't matter much since VM "drives" function like self-contained files. They'll show up as files on the drive and can be moved around like regular files.
