Using the same sets of RAM chips together
Using the same sets of RAM chips together
Looking for alternatives because 128GB DDR5 RAM isn't in stock yet. Some people are considering using identical 64GB modules instead. I've heard about combining different RAM sets, but those talks often covered brand changes or speed variations too. If you're set on the same configuration, what's the best way to reach that total capacity?
It's always a chance they won't function, but as long as they're listed on the motherboard QVL, it should work. Just avoid expecting any kind of EXPO results from them. Doing 128GB overclocking without major adjustments to timing and voltage is basically impossible right now.
To address the main point, identical 2 2x32GB sets, even with matching numbers, aren't assured to function together. They might be similar if purchased from the same retailer simultaneously, but this isn't certain. It's best to steer clear of this approach. Regarding performance, 128GB DDR5 RAM often struggles to reach respectable speeds on both Intel and AMD systems, making it a less favorable option. It seems more compatible with 13th generation processors than the Ryzen 7000 line, though not significantly so. If you require over 64GB of memory, there are 48GB DDR5 modules available, allowing for a 96GB configuration—likely sufficient. For needs exceeding 96GB, consider higher-capacity kits; there are 4x48GB options that minimize compatibility issues.
