Hi and merry christmas... I've been dealing with this problem for some time now. Suddenly, my computer would freeze, crash, and the only way to resolve it was to power it off completely and restart. This has happened after several clean Windows installations, a new motherboard, and even a fresh power supply. I've also tried using DDU, reinstalling display drivers, checking thermal paste, etc. The issue seems inconsistent—sometimes it occurs during heavy tasks like gaming, other times when I'm just browsing or idle. It can happen whether I'm doing intense work or nothing at all. My temporary fix was disconnecting the second monitor, which cut down crashes from several times a day to about once a week. After this, I thought the problem might be an faulty HDMI cable, and I haven't had time to replace it in a month. However, I used an old iPad mini as a third screen with Duet Display software. When I tried setting it up again, the computer crashed right away. Since Duet creates a virtual display, Windows probably detected it and the crash was caused by the driver for that virtual screen. At this point, I'm puzzled about the exact cause—initially I thought it was a bad cable sending power back to the GPU. Here are my specs: Ryzen 5 3600, Radeon 6800XT, Kingston 480Gb M.2 with 16GB DDR4, MSI B550 Pro-VDH, Seasonic 850W PSU. TLDR: With just one monitor, everything works fine. Gaming for hours without issues. But when a second display—even virtual—is detected, the PC crashes instantly and I have to restart. Even after uninstalling Duet, the problem persisted. Going back to a system restore a few days ago seemed to help temporarily.
Turn off the Multiplane Overlay MPO setting. The Ryzen 3600 lacks an integrated graphics unit.
It was about to mention that it doesn't have one. MPO refers to a specific setting or feature, and I'm not sure where to find the right place to make this change. I found the information in a Reddit thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/yv...fixed_all/) and tried applying it after restarting and connecting my second monitor. Ten minutes after powering up the PC and before starting the game, it occurred again. I unplugged the second monitor once more. I didn’t mention earlier that the second screen flashes green while the main display stays black. It’s unclear if this matters. Also, the keyboard shuts off during these instances, appearing quicker when both monitors are active. It still happens occasionally with just one monitor, though it takes longer for the keyboard to turn off. Update: I did this manually instead of using a registry file on the NVIDIA forum. After three hours of gaming it’s been stable so far. I’ll keep you updated—it looks good. I haven’t managed two monitors this long in a while. Edited December 26, 2024 by lazy_clap
