I thought about turning my old PC into an HTPC for my mom using its HDD, GPU, and some components, but I damaged the motherboard. If I reassemble it with the new PC, will I face issues when connecting the same HDD to the old OS on a new motherboard and parts? The OS I’m using is Windows 8.1.

Likely. Recent updates to Windows tend to be more demanding (from version 7 onward), yet users will still encounter issues. If it even starts up, things can get frustrating.

Because your motherboard isn’t working, the Windows key won’t help either. You bought the CD to locate the product key, but it won’t be usable once you can’t access the system anymore.
