They seem to mark their route by placing cobblestone blocks with torches at the exit, guiding others who follow along a single wall.

By keeping it on one side, it should work fine. I’ve always placed torches on the right and never gotten lost.

I did it about four years back, but I believe it adjusted the config to 1000 or 100
